An American fiction writer, she is best known for her 1902 novel, Aliens, which presents a portrait of racist-divided South America. Her other works include a novel entitled The Trial of 1904; a collection of short stories named Dead Letters and other pieces; and many personal short stories.
She often writes about American college culture, setting up many of her stories and novels in the imaginary college village of Dulwich.
