He is a three-time O. Henry Award winner for his short stories "A Bottle of Milk for Mom," "The Captain Was Impaled," and "Brother's House."

He graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a degree in journalism and later worked for a local newspaper. He published his first novel, Numbers of People in Boots, in 1935.
