The son of farmer James Danby, he and his twin spent their early years in County Wexford and Dublin, Ireland. He started practicing as an artist when he was still a young boy; One of his first major works, Gorge Avon's View, was completed in 1822.
His two sons, Thomas and James, both had successful careers as painters. Their marriage to their mother ended when his aunt took up with artist Paul Falconer Poole.
