Who is Painter Nam Son?
Painter Nam Son was born Nguyen Van Tho. He is a famous painter and has made great contributions to contemporary Vietnamese Fine Arts. He and the French painter Tardieu (V. Tardieu) were the two founders of the Fine Arts College Indochina.
Painter Nam Son died in 1973 in Hanoi.
In 1923, Painter Nam Son participated in the first exhibition in Hanoi with 4 oil paintings: Still Life, Confucian House of the North, Co. Bac Ky girl, Old man Kim Lien. These are the first oil paintings of Vietnamese painting. In 1930, Nam Son and his painting "Rice Market on the Red River" participated in the Paris Painting Exhibition. In the exhibition "Rice Market on the Red River" is the first and only painting of Vietnam that France bought and displayed at the French National Museum of Fine Arts. In 1946, he was invited by the Ministry of National Education of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam to become an advisor of the Institute of Ancient Uncle Ho. In 1957, the Vietnam Fine Arts Association was established, painter Nam Son was elected to the Executive Committee, and held the title for 16 years until his death
In 1998, three works of artist Nam Son were selected. participated in the exhibition "Vietnamese Spring" in Paris - France organized by the Ministry of Culture and Information of Vietnam and the Paris City Hall. Also in 1998, the book "Voyager Magazine" was published in Paris introduced about this exhibition and in the article was printed the Portrait of a Farmer by Nam Son with the comment written right on the work: "Only To this day, after so many years of being forgotten, Vietnamese painters have forced people to respect them." After 25 years of painter Nam Son's death, he was posthumously awarded the Medal "For the Cause of Fine Arts" by the Vietnam Fine Arts Association in 1998.
In the works of painter Nam Son, he was influenced by many things. by the painting background of Japan and China, but his main tendency is European classical. - Oil painting "Cho Gao on the Red River" painted in 1930 participated in the Paris Exhibition of Painting, bought by the French State and displayed at the Museum of Art. The French National Museum of Fine Arts.
- The oil painting "Portrait of my mother" won the silver medal at the International Exhibition of Fine Arts - Paris in 1932.
- The engraving 7-color wood "White Stork and Goldfish" painted in 1929, received a Roman certificate of merit in 1932.
- Oil painting "Confucian Portrait" painted in 1923 is one of the oil paintings. The first pastel painting of Vietnamese painting, "Portrait of Sung warm Tuong", painted in 1927, is the first painting of Vietnamese painting in this field.
- Silk painting "Going to the market" painted in 1927.
- Silk painting "Rural maiden" was purchased in 1935 by the French Ministry of Education and Fine Arts.
- The book "Chinese painting" printed in French "La peinture chinoise", is the first book on fine art published in Vietnam. Printed on weekly newspaper "Van Nghe" - Hanoi.
As a child, painter Nam Son studied Confucianism and studied drawing with the Confucianists Pham Nhu Binh and Nguyen Si Duc. He was exposed to the ancient oriental painting art from a very early age. After graduating from Buoi School, Nam Son joined the Indochina Finance Department. In his spare time, he often paints illustrations for newspapers and textbooks.
Painter Nam Son comes from a family in Hanoi. His father was the Secretary of the Tonkin Office of Tonkin but died early when Nam Son was only 4 years old. After his father's death, his mother raised her son alone, she was ruled by the king Ban Kim Khanh engraved 4 words "Tet Hanh Kha Phong" to praise.
