His parents are German and French. When he was 2 years old, his family moved to rural Rago in Kingman County, Kansas. His childhood was associated with agricultural machinery and exploring new farming methods. He used to work as a car dealer in Enid, Oklahoma.
In 1910, there was an air show in his hometown that attracted his attention to the field, so he decided to move to New York and work. He worked at the Queen's Airplane Company.
The first aircraft he built, the Silverwing, was built by him in 1911 with successive flight tests failing.
In June 1911, his first successful test flight made many people look at him differently and he was nicknamed the Birdman of Enid.
In 1925 he founded the Air Travel Manufacturing Company in Wichita, Kansas, with Walter Beech and Lloyd Stearman. The company quickly became a leader in aircraft manufacturing in the United States. But after 2 years, he left the company to carry out the plan to establish his own company.
On September 7, 1927 he cooperated with Victor Roos airline, but after 1 month due to Roos' resignation, Clyde Vernon Cessna acquired the Victor Roos company and changed its name to Cessna Corporation.
