Who is Vietnamese Emperor Thanh Thai?
Thanh Thai's real name is Nguyen Phuc Buu Lan, is the 10th king of the Nguyen Dynasty, ruled the country from 1889 to 1907. He, along with King Duy Tan and Ham Ng, were 3 patriotic kings who were exiled on bail. country during the French colonial period.
Nguyen Phuc Buu Lan, also known as Nguyen Phuc Chieu, is the 7th child of King Duc Duc and Mrs. Phan Thi Dieu. He is the grandson of Thoai Thai Vuong Nguyen Phuc Hong Y. At the age of 4, King Duc Duc was dethroned and died in prison. At the age of 9, his grandfather, the minister of the House of Representatives, Phan Dinh Binh, was arrested by Dong Khanh because he scolded Dong Khanh as a flatter and pro-French. Buu Lan and his mother Tu Minh went to Kinh Do, but had to live in poverty and under house arrest.
On January 28, 1889, King Dong Khanh fell seriously ill and died. The son of King Dong Khanh, Buu Dao, was only 3 years old, so he could not pass the throne. The Hue court asked Ambassador of the Central and Northern States Pierre Paul Rheinart for his opinion. At that time, Diep Van Cuong was the interpreter. Diep Van Cuong is the husband of Buu Lan's biological aunt, and also out of pity for King Duc Duc, he sought to make Buu Lan king. While translating, he edited the lines of Nuncio Rheinart and the Privy Institute, so Buu Lan was chosen as his successor.
On February 2, 1889, Buu Lan ascended the throne, taking the name Thanh Thai, then he was only 10 years old. Thanh Thai dynasty had many different points before, that is, the coronation ceremony did not have the Truyen Quoc buu billion seal jade, because the jade sister was taken by the king Ham Nghi lost. Thanh Thai is considered a progressive, patriotic and anti-French king. Unlike previous kings, he studied Confucianism, learned French, and had his children learn French. He also cut his hair short, wore a costume, drove a car, drove a canoe, got acquainted with the culture of Western. He is considered a king close to the people, he often visits the lives of the people.

King Thanh Thai gradually showed a very high national spirit. He hated the extra cents mandarins. Under his reign, there were still campaigns against the French, but in general, Vietnam at that time had gradually stabilized. Therefore, many new buildings were built. Especially in the imperial city of Hue, Quoc Hoc schools, hospitals, Trang Tien bridge... were all built at this time.

When Thanh Thai implemented radical ideas, The French colonial government began to worry and tried every way to stop him. He was quick to pretend to act like a lunatic. When his weapon drawings were discovered by the French, he feigned madness and tore up the drawings. The French took this opportunity to tell him he was crazy and then forced him to abdicate, leaving the throne to his son for health reasons. The French nuncio also told him directly that they knew that he intended to oppose the French, so they could not let him continue to be king. If Thanh Thai still wants to keep the throne, he must sign an apology paper, declaring to the people that there is a conspiracy against the French, now he has changed his mind. But he threw this proclamation away and flatly refused.

On July 29, 1907, Thanh Thai did not approve that the Ambassador Lévêque and the Council of Ministers had appointed a number of mandarins. so Lévêque dethroned Thanh Thai and put him under house arrest in the Citadel. Since then, a main sub-committee headed by Truong Nhu Cuong has been established. On September 3, 1907, courtiers performed the scene of presenting the king with a draft of abdication requested by the French government. In the draft abdication, there are signatures of all officials except Ngo Dinh Kha. After reading the draft, King Thanh Thai wrote two words "approval" and then turned his back to go in.

On September 12, 1907, Thanh Thai Vi took him to Cap Saint Jacques (Vung Tau). present day) for containment. In 1916, he was exiled to the island of Réunion with his son, King Duy Tan. Thanh Thai died on March 20, 1954 in Saigon, dead body. His remains were buried in the grounds of An Lang citadel of Thua Thien province.
