The French nuncio also told him directly that they knew that he intended to oppose the French, so they could not let him continue to be king. If Thanh Thai still wants to keep the throne, he must sign an apology paper, declaring to the people that there is a conspiracy against the French, now he has changed his mind. But he threw this proclamation away and flatly refused.

On July 29, 1907, Thanh Thai did not approve that the Ambassador Lévêque and the Council of Ministers had appointed a number of mandarins. so Lévêque dethroned Thanh Thai and put him under house arrest in the Citadel. Since then, a main sub-committee headed by Truong Nhu Cuong has been established. On September 3, 1907, courtiers performed the scene of presenting the king with a draft of abdication requested by the French government. In the draft abdication, there are signatures of all officials except Ngo Dinh Kha. After reading the draft, King Thanh Thai wrote two words "approval" and then turned his back to go in.
