Young / Before famous

April 1943, he was awarded the rank of lieutenant.
On July 26, 1943 he continued to shoot down 4 Japanese planes with this achievement he was awarded the Distinguished title Service Cross. At the same time, in August 1943, he was promoted to the position of captain.
As of April 1944, he had shot down all 27 Japanese planes. After vacation he returned to work in September 1944 as a combat commander in New Guinea without flying. But he continued to fly during the Philippine campaign from Tacloban in Leyte and increased the number of aircraft shot down to 40 by December 1944.
For his achievements in 1944 he was awarded the medal. Medal of Honor from General Douglas MacArthur.
