Best known for penning the 2000 television miniseries Sally Hemings: An American Scandal, this writer and producer became the first African-American Writers Guild Award Script long-form American Original Model
She wrote the screenplay for the series. 1998 film Why Fools. Passion? The film was directed by Gregory Nava and stars Vivica A. Fox and Halle Berry. She has also written several novels, including The Hollywood Dolls (published 2009) and Charlotte Sophia: The Hollywood Dolls. Myth, Madness and Moor (2010)

After graduating from the theater program at New York University, she pursued a career in screen acting. In the 1970s, she played Valerie Grant on the NBC soap opera The Days of Our Lives and the role of Aurelia on the popular ABC miniseries Roots.
