In addition to his political career, he is an animal rights activist, diarist, and author of a controversial historical work titled The Donkey.

The son of Irishwoman Elizabeth Martin Clark and art historian Kenneth Clark, he grew up in London with siblings siblings named Colin and Colette. He and his wife, Jane, raised two children and were married from 1958 until his death from brain cancer in 1999.
