Between 1964 and 1972, this Socialist and Democratic Party politician represented East Tyrone voters in the Parliament of Northern Ireland. Then, from 1999 to 2002, as a member of the Fine Gael party, he served Dublin West in the Irish House of Commons.
Before retiring from politics in 2002, he ran an unsuccessful campaign for President of Northern Ireland and also served as Minister of Education, Justice and Health.

After attending Queen's University Belfast, he joined the National Party of Northern Ireland and later became active in the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association. While participating in this group, he helped found the Democratic Party and the Socialist Labor Party.

He grew up in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, as a member of a Catholic family. Her marriage to Annita Currie produced five children.
