In 1975 , Vo Trong Viet joined the army and became a soldier of the 22nd battalion of the 4th military zone of the Vietnam People's Army. Then on September 17, 1977, he was admitted to the Party. On March 17, 1979, he was officially a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
In 1980, he graduated from the Officer's School. Armed police, now the Border Guard Academy, was awarded the rank of Second lieutenant, then he was assigned to work at the Reconnaissance Department of Military Region V to receive the task of seconding against FULRO in Dak Lak. Some time later, he was promoted to Deputy Commander and then Commander of the Border Guard Command of Ha Tinh province.
In 2005, he was appointed as Political Commissar at the Border Guard Command and promoted to Major General; in 2006, he was elected as a member of the 12th National Assembly. In 2009, he was promoted to Lieutenant General
In January 2011, he was a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam; on October 2, 2015, he was appointed by the Prime Minister to hold the position of Deputy Minister of National Defense and promoted to the rank of Senior General
In January 2016, he held the position of Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party Vietnam and was elected a member of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly on April 4, 2016. Then, on April 5, 2016, he took on the additional position of Chairman of the National Assembly's Committee for Defense and Security. .
