He studied design at university and began creating his own art jewelry in the 1950s.
He was born in Victoria, British Columbia to a German-Scotland American father and a (native Canadian) mother Haida. He came down, on his mother's side, from members of a Pacific Coast First Nations tribe, and he learned about the jewelry of his people from his grandfather.
