Remembered as one of the early American eye sculptors, he created an 1812 neoclassical sculpture titled the Fourth of July at Center Square, as well as the famous comedian and sculpture. That tragedy once stood outside the Chestnut Street Theater in Philadelphia and has since been exhibited at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

In his late teens, Rush studied with a wood artist named Edward Cutbush and began carving wooden scarecrows for ships. He later fought in the American Revolution and went on to found the woodcarving company that served the United States Navy.
