Vo Thanh Tung was born completely healthy, but polio fever caused his legs to atrophy. The family originally lived on a boat with a river business, so Thanh Tung mainly used his hands to move and swim in the river to catch fish with his family.
During the recruitment round to prepare for the 2005 National Paralympic Games, Coach Bui Thanh Tam named Vo Thanh Tung to the disabled swimming team of Can Tho.
