In 1977 he had a near-death experience. That, along with his study of the Koran, convinced him to convert to Islam. He soon moved to Norwich, England, studying affiliated a Scottish convert that he admired. In 1979 he moved to the United Arab Emirates to study Sharia. In 1984, he publicly separated himself from his Scottish teacher for academic reasons and moved to North Africa to study Morocco, Algeria, and Spain. In 1996, he founded the Zaytuna Institute, which was first created to revive the traditional and scientific studies of Islam. It became a 4-year accredited Islamic liberal arts university under the name Zaytuna College in 2010.
He was born Marc Hanson to two scholars, who made Him between the West and East coasts of the United States. He is of Irish, Greek and Scottish descent and is believed to have been on his way to becoming a Greek Orthodox priest when he converted to Islam.
