Known for his work on the philosophy of education – specifically, on a model of educating the German public that he particularly admired – this educational reformer served as the first President of the University of Michigan since 1852 to 1863. The regent of the University of Michigan disliked what they considered selfish Tappan and removed him from the office of the university president in 1863.
