Neurobiologist and physiologist who received the 2003 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on the structure and functioning of ion channels. He also worked to figure out the three-dimensional molecular structure of a potassium channel from bacteria using X-ray crystals.
He was awarded the Lasker Albert Prize for Basic Medical Research in 1999 and the Gairdner Foundation International Prize in 2001.
