He was working as a chemist at the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company when he invented the sticky acrylate copolymer that would later result in the invention of later notes.

He and his wife, Linda Anne Martin Silver, married in 1965. The couple's two daughters, Allison Anne Silver and Jennifer Lynne Silver, were born in 1966 and 1969, respectively.
