Influential African-American author, scholar, PBS miniseries host, and intellectual and civil servant who writes about race, politics, history, and culture. His scholarly publication, The Meaningful Monkey, won the American Book Award in 1989. He was erroneously arrested outside his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts, after someone called in complaint of an attempted break-in. The 2009 arrest led to a debate about the racist attitudes of law enforcement officials.
