Tran Thai Tong was the first king of the Tran dynasty in Vietnamese history. He ruled the country for 33 years from 1225 to 1258, then he was crown prince until his death.
Tran Thai Tong's real name was Tran Bo, later renamed Tran Canh, in Chinese history books called him Tran Quang Binh or Tran Nhat Canh. He is the son of the inner city mandarin Tran Thua. His mother was Thuan Tu, Queen Le Thi. Tran Bo is a person with a wide face and high nose, who is likened to Han Cao To. When Tran Canh was born, Tran Thua and Tran Tu Khanh took control of the Ly court. That's why he was called Tran Nhi Lang.
When he was 7 years old, his uncle was Thai monk. thu-do/baia">Tran Thu Do nominates as Chi Empress Dowager, who stays by and serves the princess Ly Chieu Hoang. In 1225, Tran Thu Do forced Ly Chieu Hoang to marry and cede the throne to Tran Canh. After Tran Canh became king, he took the title Tran Thai Tong. He appointed Ly Chieu Hoang to become Queen Chieu Thanh. Because Empress Chieu Thanh could not give birth to a son to succeed her, Tran Thu Do forced Tran Thai Tong to depose her and appointed Chieu Thanh's sister Thuan Thien as queen. Thuan Thien is the wife of Tran Lieu, brother of Thai Tong. At that time, Thuan Thien was three months pregnant with Tran Lieu, so because of this, Tran Lieu rebelled in the Cai River, but lost his position and was spared death by King Thai Tong.
Tran Thai Tong and his father Emperor Tran Thua and his uncle Tran Thu Do carried out legal and administrative reforms, encouraged agriculture and commerce, and enhanced the development of education "Three religions in the plains". He also built a strong army, preventing the Champa army from raiding in the South. During this time, in the north, Mongolia was rising into a powerful military empire. In 1258, the Mongol general Uriyangqatai attacked Dai Viet. Tran Thai Tong directly led the resistance army, and eventually won, driving the Mongols out of Dai Viet territory.
He is also known as a Zen master. Buddhism, has imparted its spiritual experience to Buddhist followers through works such as Zen Zong's guide to the South, Key to the Continent, Commentary on the Diamond Samadhi Sutra, and the Six Times of Confession. He is considered to have had a great influence on the formation and development of Truc Lam Zen - a unified church first formed in Vietnam at the end of the 13th century.
