Remembered for his service in the American Revolution, the American Indian Wars, and the War of 1812, he is also famous for surviving torture by members of the Shawnee tribe and later collecting the respected Shawnee and honorary tribal member.

In his late teens, he was involved in a brutal, jealous-driven romantic fight with a young man and left the crime scene for fear that he had killed his love rival. Before discovering that men, he fought with who, in fact, lived, Kenton through an alias and lived in the sparsely populated areas of Kentucky, West Virginia and Ohio.
The son of Irish immigrant Mark Kenton and American-born Mary Miller Kenton, he grew up in Fauquier County, Virginia. Between his two marriages - to Martha Dowden and Elizabeth Jarboe - he fathered ten children
