Known as mononymly Sabu and remembered for his roles in such 1940s American films as Arabian Nights and Jungle Book, he also famously appeared in the 1937 British film Elephant Boy. Also a pilot with the United States Army Air Corps, he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service in World War II.
Tragically, he died of a heart attack at the age of thirty-nine, despite appearing to be in prime physical condition.

He was born in Mysore, India, the son of an elephant driver. When he was thirteen years old, he was discovered by American filmmaker Robert Flaherty, who threw it at Elephant Boy.
His marriage to actress Marilyn Cooper resulted in a son, rock musician Paul Sabu, and a daughter, animal handler Jasmine Sabu.
