He served in the RAAF Air Crew for three years, after being drafted in 1943. He studied architecture at the University of Sydney and graduated with honors. He was a Fine Arts student at the Eastern Technical University of Sydney.
His first home was designed with his brother, Neville. He married Ruth Harvey, with whom he designed the greenhouse that became their home. They, along with Neville Gruzman and Tony Moore, entered a competition to design the Sydney Opera House.
