Modern designer of furniture who also became known for his work in graphic design and film. Several of his interior designs are placed highly in the Museum of Modern Art in New York's property design competition Home Furnishing.

He is a part-time worker for the Laclede Steel company. He was an architecture student at Washington University in St. Louis, but quit after two years because of conflicts with the teaching staff over his passion for modernism.
He and his first wife, Catherine Woermann, met at the University of Washington and were married in 1929. They had one daughter, Lucia Jenkins. They divorced in 1941. His second wife, Ray, became his design partner.
