Poet Le Dai Thanh was born in Hai Phong into an intellectual family, originally from Thanh Hoa. He is a poet and playwright belonging to the first generation of artists of modern Vietnamese theater art, contemporaneous with The Lu and Vi Huyen Dac.
He was also a founding member of the Vietnam Writers Association (1957); Founding member of Hai Phong Arts Association (1964).

- As a child, he attended primary school at Bonnal School, Hai Phong (now Ngo Quyen High School, Hai Phong).

- In 1948, he participated in the founding congress of the Vietnam Literary and Art Association . After that, he worked at the National Salvation Culture Association, the Sea Wind magazine, the Quan Bach Dang newspaper under the Inter-regional Command III, the National Salvation newspaper under the Inter-zone I.
- In 1954, he moved worked on Van Nghe newspaper.
- In 1959-1965: he worked at Hai Phong Department of Culture.
The wife of poet Le Dai Thanh is Mrs. Dinh Ngoc Anh (the daughter of the bourgeois Van An Truong of ancient Hai Phong). The two have a total of 10 children, 4 of whom died at a young age. Most of the remaining children in Le Dai Thanh's family later became famous in their artistic career.
