Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, conductor, author, historian, jazz musician, and horn player. He and jazz pianist John Lewis were the founders of the Modern Jazz Association in 1955 He created the Third Stream description for music that married classical and jazz techniques.
He won the Pulitzer Prize for Music for "Contemporaries and Reflections" in 1994.
