After studying at the University of Denver, he taught music at Mills College San Francisco and helped set up the San Francisco Tape Music Center. He later moved to New York City, where he was offered a residency at the Tisch School of New York University.
With his wife and fellow musical partner, singer and composer Joan La Barbara, he has three children: Steven, Tamara, and Jacob
