Ton That Tung is a famous liver surgeon in Vietnam and abroad. He used to be a member of the USSR Academy of Medicine, a member of the Paris Academy, a member of the National Association of Surgeons of the German Democratic Republic, and a member of the Lyon Surgeons Association (France). He is also a professor specializing in training many talented young doctors at Hanoi Medical University.
He also held the position of Deputy Minister of Health of Vietnam and was conferred Hero of Labor. He used to be the Director of the Vietnam - Germany Friendship Hospital with the author of the dry liver cutting method.

- In 1912, when That Tung's father died, his mother took him and his four siblings to Hue to live.
- In 1944, he married Vi Thi Nguyet Ho - Ha Thanh, beauty queen, and granddaughter. The grandfather of Governor-General Ha Dong Vi Van Dinh. They have three children together, all in the medical profession Ton Nu Ngoc Tran, Ton Nu Hong Tam, and Uncle Ton That Bach - Associate Professor - Academician Rector of Hanoi Medical University.
