Broadcast journalist who became the first African-American woman to anchor a major network news show when she joined NBC News in 1974. In 1982, she began anchoring ABC's World News Tonight.
Immediately after moderating the debates between presidential candidates Bill Clinton, George Bush, and Ross Perot, she won the 1992 newspaper of the year award from the National Association of Black Journalists.
