John A. Alonzo was the first Mexican-American cinematographer to be a member of the Los Angeles Cinematographers' Guild, and the first to be inducted into the ASC.

- In 1965 he was nominated for an Oscar in the category of best short film for the film titled title The Legend of Jimmy Blue Eyes.
- In 1975 with the film Chinatown, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography and a BAFTA nomination for Best Cinematography.
- In 1994 he received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography for a Mini-Series or in particular for World War: When Lions Roared.
- In 1999 he received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Cinematography for a Miniseries or a Movie episode with Lansky.
- In 2000 he received the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lighting Direction with Kim Killingsworth for Fail-Safe.
His first job was as a camera pusher at WFAA-TV - an NBC affiliate in Dallas.
In 1956 he moved to Los Angeles and became a presenter for a TV show. children at the local radio station. After the show was canceled he switched to acting.
He later switched to television camera work at Wolper Productions, and collaborated with Winton C. Hoch, Gene Polito and James Wong Howe.
