A Harvard University historian and author whose work focuses on the American Revolution and the American Colonial period, he is a two-time recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for history. His most famous works include The Ideological Origins of the American Revolution (1967) and Voyager for the West: A Passage in American Peopling on the Eve of the Revolution (1986). He is one of two authors of the American history textbook The Great Republic.
