An American author, historical scientist, evolutionary biologist, and paleontologist, he is known for popular scientific publications such as The Mismeasure of Man (1981), Since Darwin (1977) ), and dinosaurs in Haystack (1995). Two years before his death, he was named a "Living Legend" by the Library of Congress.
He was diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma, an asbestos-related cancer, in 1982. Although his prognosis was grim, he lived more than twenty years.
