Gustav Hasford joined the United States in 1967. As a military journalist, he wrote stories for Leatherneck Magazine, Pacific Stars and Stripes, and Sea Tiger. During his military service during the Vietnam War, Hasford was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Valor Device Medal of Achievement during the Battle of Hue in 1968.
