Robert Michael Lipyte is an American sports journalist and author and former ombudsman for ESPN. He is a member of the Board of Directors who contributes articles and comments to the forums for USA Today. He received the Margaret Award from the American Library Association in 2001 for his contributions to youth writing, an important and enduring contribution to young adult literature.

Lipyte is the son of Fanny (Finston) and Sidney I. Lipsyte; His mother was a teacher, his father was a principal. He grew up in Rego Park and spent most of his childhood reading books with no time for any sport. In 1975 he published his first book, SportsWorld, when he became a sports reporter for The New York Times.
During the 1980s, Lipsyte worked for both CBS and NBC in a role. As a reporter, he also worked outside of Emmy Awards.
Lipsyte co-authored the 1964 autobiography of comedian and activist Dick Gregory.
Year In 1978, Robert Lipsyte was diagnosed with testicular cancer, he was diagnosed with cancer for the second time in 1991. With his experience of the disease, in 1992 he wrote the novel The Chemo Kid.
