An American twentieth-century author of fiction set in the fictional Ozark mountain town of "Stay More," he is known for works like Ekaterina (1993) and The Shower Pitcher (2005). He was also the recipient of both the Warren Robert Penn Prize for Fiction and the Porter Prize for Outstanding Literature.
He contracted meningitis at the age of twelve. ; As a result, he lost most of his hearing.
