The author of the famous history World War II, he is best known for Tora! Tora! Tora! , At Dawn They Sleep, and Miracle at Midway. For more than four decades, he taught history at the University of Maryland.
He studied briefly in Berlin, where he witnessed Hitler's speech firsthand. From 1945 to 1951, he worked as the chief historian on staff for General Douglas MacArthur.
