He originally wanted to be a filmmaker, and he moved to New York City to pursue this career path after graduating from college. However, his 1975 publication of his science fiction novel, The Deep, began his career as a writer.
He was born in Maine to a United States Army Air Force officer father. He later married Laurie Block, with whom he founded Straight Ahead Figures in 1989.
