Ruth Ozeki began her film career in New York. Initially, she worked as an art director, designing props for low-budget horror films. She then turned to film production. In 1994, "Body of Correspondence", which aired on PBS, won the "Film with a New Vision" award at the San Francisco Film Festival. In 1995, the film "Halving the Bones" was released to audiences, the film was also screened at the Sundanc Film Festival, at the Museum of Modern Art, at the Montreal World Film Festival and at the Margaret Mead Film Festival.

In 2013, Ruth Ozeki won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for her novel "A Tale for the Time Being". In 2014, she won the National Book Critics Circle Award for "A Tale for the Time Being". She has also received many other awards. '
During her years in Japan, she worked as a bar hostess. and studied flower arrangement, and taught at the English Department at Kyoto Sangyo University. In 1985, she moved to New York and began her film career.
