Ruth Ozeki began her film career in New York. Initially, she worked as an art director, designing props for low-budget horror films. She then turned to film production. In 1994, "Body of Correspondence", which aired on PBS, won the "Film with a New Vision" award at the San Francisco Film Festival. In 1995, the film "Halving the Bones" was released to audiences, the film was also screened at the Sundanc Film Festival, at the Museum of Modern Art, at the Montreal World Film Festival and at the Margaret Mead Film Festival.

In 1998, she released her first novel called "My Year of Meats". The novel has received generally positive reviews from critics and has won numerous literary awards, including the Kiriyama Prize. The second novel titled "All Over Creation" was published in 2003. This novel has also received a positive response from the audience as well as the experts. "All Over Creation" has also won several awards, notably the "American Book" award. In 2013, Ruth Ozeki continued to publish her next novel titled "A Tale for Time Being". This novel was selected as "The Editor's Choice 2013" for The New York Times Book Review. simultaneously received the Man Booker Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award.

She attended Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. She received a scholarship to study abroad from the Japanese Ministry of Education, then returned to work at Nara University in Nara, Nara.
During her years in Japan, she worked as a bar hostess. and studied flower arrangement, and taught at the English Department at Kyoto Sangyo University. In 1985, she moved to New York and began her film career.
