Painter Nguyen Tan Phat

Nguyen Tan Phat is one of the typical contemporary artists of Vietnam, widely known in the fields of lacquer and applied arts. Born in 1983 in Son Tay, Hanoi - a land rich in cultural traditions and handicraft villages - he was soon nurtured with a love of art from a living environment rich in folk culture. The cultural context of Xu Doai has become a persistent source of inspiration, following him throughout his creative journey.

From a young age, he showed a talent for painting and a passion for traditional materials. After graduating from high school, he studied at Hanoi University of Industrial Fine Arts, majoring in painting and lacquer technology. This is an important stage that helps him build a solid artistic foundation and at the same time form creative thinking associated with preserving and renewing Vietnamese lacquer art.

Not choosing a purely decorative path of creation, Nguyen Tan Phat approaches lacquer as an artistic language with depth. In his works, he often combines traditional techniques with modern visual thinking, creating works that have both aesthetic value and cultural stories. Familiar images in Vietnamese life such as buffalos, cats, tigers, mascots or zodiac animals are exploited creatively, symbolically and rich in Eastern philosophy.

His career has made a clear mark through many domestic fine art exhibitions, as well as community art projects associated with cultural tourism. He not only creates lacquer paintings but also strongly develops lacquer sculpture and applied arts, bringing traditional art closer to modern life. Many of his collections of works themed on zodiac animals have attracted great attention, highly appreciated by experts for their creativity and cultural value.

His persistent contributions to art have helped Nguyen Tan Phat win many prestigious awards. He received awards from the Vietnam Fine Arts Association and won high prizes at Hanoi and nationwide handicraft design competitions. In particular, his large-scale lacquer art projects have been honored in professional playgrounds, affirming his position as an artist who is both creative and preserves traditional quintessence. In addition, he was also awarded the title of Hanoi Typical Artisan, recognizing his role in preserving and developing lacquer craft.

In addition to creative activities, he also actively teaches vocational skills to the younger generation, participates in activities to preserve craft villages and spread traditional fine arts values. For him, art does not just stop at the gallery but needs to be attached to the community, becoming a part of contemporary cultural life.
