Aida De Acosta is known as the first woman to fly a personal flight and is an American social activist. It took her only three lessons before she made her first flight.
On June 27, 1903 she made a solo flight from Paris to Château de Bagatelle with the help of pilot Santos- Dumont rode her bicycle below, waving and shouting for advice.
In 1992 she discovered she had glaucoma, a disease that left her with missing one eye. She raised funds to establish the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1925 with the amount of $3,000.00.
In 1935 the mayor of New York was Mr. /chinh-tri-gia/fiorello-la-guardia/a0ip">Fiorello La Guardia named after her a new arts committee created to stimulate artistic and performing life From 1945 to 1955 she served as the director of the Sight eye rehabilitation bank in New York, the first eye bank in the United States.

In the summer of 1903 after a trip to Paris, she had a special interest in the Santos-Dumont airship.

Her father, Ricardo de Acosta, was a Cuban-born steamboat operator. Her mother is Micaela Hernández de Alba y de Alba - descended from the famous Spanish duke Alba. She has seven siblings.
Her first husband was Oren Root III - grandson of an American politician. They married in 1908 and divorced in 1922. The couple had a son, Oren Root IV (1911-1995) and a daughter, Alva de Acosta Root.
Second husband. Her second is Colonel Henry S. Breckinridge. The two married in 1927 and divorced in 1947.
