She received her childhood education at a New York City Catholic school. She sold her first poem to Vanity Fair in 1914 and was hired as an assistant editor for Vogue a few months later.
She was born Dorothy Rothschild and is the daughter of Jacob Henry and Eliza Annie Rothschild. She married Alan Campbell twice, first in 1934 and again in 1950. The couple's second marriage shot ended with Campbell's suicide in 1963.
