Who is Poet Vien Phuong?
Poet Vien Phuong real name Phan Thanh Vien, originally from Tan Chau district, Chau Doc province (today is Tan Chau town, An province Giang). He is a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
In addition to the pen name Vien Phuong, he also took the pseudonym Phuong Vien and composed prose. He is famous for his poem 'Visit Uncle Ho' (Kim Son put music) which was taught in high schools.
During the two wars of resistance against the French and Americans, he was active in the South. He was one of the earliest writers of the Southern Liberation Arts and Culture forces during the anti-American period.
Poet Vien Phuong died on 21st. December 2005 at Ho Chi Minh City.

Young / Before famous

  • August Revolution broke out (1945), he joined the Revolution and was assigned to the 23rd Battalion. This detachment operated over a large area in the Mekong Delta.
  • In 1952, his epic 'Victory for Peace' was ranked second in poetry when the South organized a literary and artistic summary prize named Cuu Long Prize.
  • The resistance war against the French ended, he was assigned to Saigon to operate. Returning to Saigon, he went to school, worked as a hired hand to earn a living, but his main job was still writing poetry. Under the pen name Vien Phuong, he wrote poems and stories published in a number of newspapers in Saigon such as Humanity, Dawn, Justice...
  • In 1960, due to the content of the articles. protesting, he was imprisoned by the Saigon government in Chi Hoa.
  • After being released from prison (1962), he left Saigon to enter the Cu Chi battlefield to continue fighting and writing poetry.
  • After 1975, he was elected President of Ho Chi Minh City Liberation Arts Association, then Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City Literary and Arts Union and was elected to the Executive Committee. Vietnam Writers Association.

His son is Associate Professor-Dr. Phan Thanh Binh, currently a member of the Party Central Committee - Director of the Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City.
