One of the most respected political figures in Hungarian history, the Austrian-born Szechenyi held office as Hungarian Minister of Public Works and Transport and significantly modernized and reformed culture, economy, and politics in Hungary.
His published works include Onismeret (Self-Awareness) and Ein Blick (One Look). He wrote his later historical and philosophical works not long before he committed suicide driven depression at age sixty-eight.
