Republican politician who became the 18th Deputy Governor of Florida in 2011, the first woman elected to that position. She was forced to resign in 2013 amid allegations that she was involved in a gambling front.
She was the first black citizen to appoint lieutenant governor of Florida, and the first black person to be elected to statewide office in Florida since Reconstruction and in 2001, President George W. Bush appointed her to the Committee on Presidential Scholars.
