While studying at the Universities of Bordeaux and the Sorbonne, he became involved in the French resistance movement of World War II and was later sent to many Nazi concentration camps.
A native of Lodz, Poland, he was the son of a Jewish textile mill owner who later died at the Auschwitz concentration camp. After immigrating to the United States, he married (and later divorced) a teacher named Alice Burns; couples raising two children.
