He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and earned his master's degree from Yale University in 1808. He later became a pastor after graduating from the Andover Theological Seminary.
His wife, Sophia Fowler, is a former student of his. They had eight children together, including Edward Miner Gallaudet, who founded what would become Gallaudet College, the first university for the deaf.
