After graduating from Princeton University in the early 1950s, he earned a doctorate from the University of Chicago. During the late 1950s and part of the 1960s, he held a professorship at Columbia University.
With his first wife, Doria Slote, he brought up daughters named Judy and Catherine. After Slote's 1970 death, he married Middle Eastern historian Guity Nashat and became stepfather to Michael and Cyrus Claffey.
