Co-recepient, with Herbert Spencer Gasser, Nobel Prize in Medicine 1944, for their research into neurotransmitters. He helped identify several types of nerve fibers and did important work on the relationship between action potential speed and fiber diameter.
He had studied the circulatory system before turning his research to the nervous system, and in 1922 he and Gasser suffered from an oscilloscope studying how nerves conduct signals.
