Best known for his role as United States Air Force Army Sergeant Kinchloe on the popular CBS sitcom Heroes Hogan, he is also remembered for his Emmy-nominated role of character in the 1967 CBS Playhouse drama War Winter Olly's final painting. During the 1970s and '80s, he pursued a career as a director, working on such series as The A-Team, The Waltons, and Magnum, PI A Straight Civil Rights Activist. Frankly, he heads an organization called Black Actors for Action.

After earning a degree in theater from Western North Carolina University, he made his first Broadway production in 1957's The Resident's Cave. Two years later, he was featured in the original Broadway production of A Raisin in the Sun.
He spent his early childhood in Harlem, New York, and his high school years in Gaston County, North Carolina. His marriage to Berlie Ray Dixon lasted from 1954 until his death in 2008.
