This twentieth-century leader of the Dominican Revolutionary Party served during the late 1970s and early 1980s as President of the Dominican Republic. His presidency ended when he committed suicide in 1982.
While in office, he raised the working minimum wage in the Dominican Republic, reorganized the military, and reformed improve public transport. His ability to repair his country's declining economy, however, was limited by the presence of a heavily reformed Congress Party.
